Food waste

Environment   Mar 21, 2017 by Heidi Merriman

How can we stop house holds, restaurants, businesses from throwing out all of their food that is still good but might have a bruise on it or something?

I think your question is very thought provoking, it might be a good idea to look at some of the guide lines currently in place for restaurants in Canada and look at how those can be improved.

Hi Heidi,

I find your inquiry question very interesting. In confronts an issue that many Canadians head on, both economically and environmentally. A solution to this question could be simply donation. There are lots of donations, food drives that resolve this issue. I suggest you look into these organizations to see exactly how this food is dealt with. Though donation is a solution, I am looking forward to seeing how exactly you will come up with a plan for preventing food to go to waste. Though our inquiries (transportation - infrastructure) do not have much in common, I believe they both connect to the well being of the environment. Below is a source to further your knowledge on some food drives available.

Hi Heidi,

I believe your inquiry is a great topic to discuss because a lot of people can relate to this question. I liked how you mentioned that food waste has a huge impact on climate change. This topic should discussed more because there’s many solutions that can apply to this issue. I suggest people to keep leftover food instead of throwing it out. This will reduce gas emissions to the atmosphere with less transportation and burning of waste. I also recommend you to follow this link which informs people more about this issue and gives us practical ways on reducing food waste and saving money.

Our inquiries don’t have anything in common but I do agree with yours. Your inquiry mostly focuses on food waste and mine relates more to transportation. We both want to help the environment.

Your topic is very interesting and I can’t wait to find about more about it.

Hey Heidi,

GREAT topic! Did you know that food waste costs Canada $31 billion every single year?

I'll be keeping an eye out on what you come up with!

In the meantime, here's some *food for thought* (haha): https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/04/fren...

Keep up the great work!

Have you heard about ugly fruits and vegetables? In the past these were often thrown out by grocery stores as food waste but there is a movement now to resell or donate these food products to be used in various ways. This has led to some cool start-up business ideas too. Check out this article: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/ugly-fruit-...
