Forest Fires -Question/answer #2

Apr 9, 2016 by Claire Paquette

Question: If the summer temperature increases by approximately 4 degrees, as shown in the “Kingston’s Weather Modeling Projections” by what percent would forest fires increase near the Kingston/Gananoque area?

Answer:

Recent research has showed that there is most likely going to be a large loss of biodiversity, if the temperature increases by 4 degrees Celsius. With climate change occurring and the world having a high CO2 concentrate, the fires would change the earth’s ecosystems into states that no one has seen before. One of the largest ecosystem shifts that would occur would be habitat destruction.

With the 4 degrees Celsius temperature raise, extreme weather events such as forest fires would increase. An increase in forest fires could also increase the forests venerability to heat and drought; which could result in species extinction. There has yet been a research/ study on what percent forest fires would increase in the Kingston/Gananoque area.
