Climate Change and Downhill Skiing (Blog #2)

Environment   Apr 10, 2016 by Katie Regis

I found all of my information on the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority website.

I discovered since 1948, the annual temperature of the Mississippi Watershed has increased by 1.4°C on average. With beliefs this climate trend will continue, most temperature increase will occur during the winter.

Associated with the increase in temperate of the watershed, there has been more warm-water species of fish and less cold-water species of fish in the Mississippi river. A study from Dr. John Casselman shows that an increase in temperature of 3°C in the Watershed will result in a 14.7 fold increase in warm water species of fish, and a decrease in cold species of fish of 20.1 fold. A fold change is how much a quantity changes or duplicates going from an one value to another.

Lower water levels are also predicted to occur throughout the Mississippi Watershed. The rate in which stream flows may exceed the capacity of the reservoir system. However, this prediction is hard to evaluate as the rainfall is dependant on this theory.

  • It has come to the conclusion that global warming is the cause of climate change.

In order to slow Global Warming, it’s important that we stop deforestation. One of the gasses causing Global Warming is Carbon Dioxide which trees convert to oxygen.

Most home heating burns fossil fuels which creates green house gas emissions. In order to stop this from contributing to Global Warming, all houses should transfer to solar electric energy.

A huge factor contributing to Global Warming is fuels burned from our vehicles. An alternative that is better for the environment is transferring to an electric or hybrid vehicle.
