Climate Change Health Impacts on Elders

Environment   Apr 20, 2016 by Andrea

The Problem:

-Elders have a higher sensitivity to the health impacts of climate change

-Elders are the most vulnerable population

-Elders are more reliant on caregivers to effectively adapt to the changes

-Elders have impaired cognition

-Reduced mobility

-Inability to sense dehydration

-Elders also have pre-existing health conditions which increases the likelihood of developing heat related illness

The Impacts:

-heat exhaustion

-heat stroke

-hypothermia

-further worsening medical conditions

-the movement of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases

-respiratory and cardiovascular diseases

-water and food borne contamination

Solutions:

-increase amounts of retirement homes in London

-Make public announcements about the dangers of heat stroke for elders

-provide more caregivers and money for air conditioning and heating

-encourage youth to pursue employment in environmental and medical studies
