Ontario is one of the most expensive places to produce apples due to high costs for labour and to meet food safety regulations. Because of the high price of locally grown apples, apples are imported into Canada from countries like the United States, Chile and China where the fruits are much cheaper to produce and can be sold for less money. Importing apples from other countries kills the industry of fresh apples grown in Canada as the Canadian apples cost more to produce and then in result cost more to buy in farmers markets and stores. Ontario is importing approximately 40 - 50% of all apples in stores. This importation rate is causing many orchards in Ontario to shut down because their apples are not being sold in stores as it is cheaper to import apples from other countries.
