Climate Change Where I Live

Environment   Apr 28, 2016 by Iris

What are possible action implements to mitigate climate change (slow down/prevent the ice from melting at such a rapid pace)?

Current Situation

  • Animals, such as polar bears are becoming endangered, because the sea ice are melting and disappearing for longer periods, which leaves the polar bears with not enough time to hunt for food.
  • Glaciers are melting at a quicker than natural pace. It is extremely unhealthy for the environment and many Arctic animals are seeing a loss of habitat and/or drowning because of the rising sea levels.
  • Many areas are seeing many more floods because of the rapid pace at which the ice is melting and the sea levels are rising.
  • People living close to large bodies of water may have to relocate because they face the risk of seeing the area in which they live to be flooded and/or disappearing underwater.
  • The melting ice is creating more freshwater therefore oceans are becoming less saline. This can be fatal for certain organisms that are adapted to water with high salinity.

Answer to Question

  • Stop drilling for oil in the Arctic
  • Use renewable energy sources
  • Appeal to current leaders to invest in more ecologically friendly technology
  • Reducing our CO2 emissions
    • Taking public transit
    • Walking/ Biking around to places
  • Reduce waste
    • Buy less packaged products (less burnt garbage)

Action(s) to Take

  • Reduce/Stop eating meat
    • Release of methane gases
  • Invest in Solar panels
  • Continue to become more informed about this issue
