Deforestation

Environment   Mar 21, 2017 by Regan

I know that there is more cons than pros when it comes to clear cutting, but what would one or two of the positives be? If any. Another question I have is what are some solutions for deforestation? what can we as youth, do to help with that?

Hi Regan, I find the topic of clear cutting and deforestation very interesting because of the size and scale at which deforestation is currently happening around the world. I also like the question you asked because in order to understand a problem you need to look at both sides of it. I encourage you to continue your investigation into how deforestation and clear cutting is affecting Canada and your area specifically and what are possible solutions. My inquiry question is about energy infrastructure, which doesn’t directly relate to deforestation but shares the outcome. After doing some research, I found that both deforestation and inefficient energy creation and conservation cause there to be a greater amount of GHGs in the atmosphere. Also, it seems that deforestation is happening because trees are an easy resource to exploit, which is similar to why natural gas and coal have been used for energy. I look forward to seeing what other information you find and the conclusions you come to.

Hey Regan,

I'm interested to hear what you come up with as possible benefits of clear cutting, seeing as I'm of the opinion (like most, I would think) that clear cutting is a terrible idea.

Here's some information to kickstart your research and activate your critical thinking skills: https://www.thoughtco.com/deforestation-in-canada-... http://globalforestatlas.yale.edu/amazon/land-use/...

I'll be checking back in to see what you come up with!

Our forests are being replaced by concrete jungles and houses... this leaves the terrain more prone to flooding, erosion and mudslides. There is not much positives that I can think of right now where climate change is concerned.
