Our topic is the boreal forest and how we as a community can protect it. We have learned so much about its diversity and how the ecosystem is a vital part of our health. Living in Alberta the boreal forest covers almost half of the land mass and supplies us with jobs, recreation, air quality, etc. While doing research on how we can protect the boreal forest and also leave a sustainable idea behind for our future generations we have learned tons about it. Some facts that will help you understand why the boreal forest is so important are-
→ The boreal forest is one of the last pristine forest left in the world. Its vast land area and trees are one of the biggest carbon storages in the world and give us the air we breath.
→ Approximately 325 species of birds call the Boreal Forest home and use it for their survival
→ More than 30% of the Canadian Boreal Forest has been reserved for some form of current or future industrial development overall.
→ About 94% of the Boreal Forests is on publicly owned land. This enables the government to regulate harvesting and apply land-use.
→ The four biggest threats that the boreal forest faces are logging, mining, gas and oil and hydro.
We have looked at all the negatives impacts we have been having on our forest regions in canada and especially here in alberta. It’s important to us that people are educated on what's right in their backyards and understand that we need to start acting like leaders in the fight against climate change and being a sustainable country and province. People like CPAWS, Greenpeace Canada, Boreal Songbird Initiative are all working to educate and take action on our threatened forests.
It’s not just about protecting the land but also the animals inside the forest who need it to survive, the lakes and rivers that are crucial to us having clean water, the filtration system deep within that gives us our great air quality and everything in between.
