We are trying to figure out how our school can reduce the usage of paper towel, which would also reduce costs and the environmental impact of our school.
One problem is that all of the paper towel in the bathrooms goes into the garbage, as there are no recycling bins. The paper towel is overused by students, at the end of the day most of the garbage bins are overflowing with paper towel.
We still have to figure out the exact cost and usage of paper towel in our school.
One solution to this is installing hand dryers in each bathroom to replace the paper towel dispensers. With the cheaper models it would cost ~$1500 initially, but then the annual costs would be much lower compared to paper towel. There are also dispensers in the shops rooms, but those would most likely not be replaced with hand dryers.
The downside to the cheap models is that they have a higher chance of breaking down compared to the expensive ones, and if they broke down often enough, the cost to repair them would make it futile. The other disadvantage of hand dryers is hygiene, the cheap hand dryers have a low air speed which means it takes longer to completely dry hands. This could cause problems as students might not be patient enough to wait for their hands to dry, and damp hands are not good because bacteria survives better in damp environments.
Another option is to get recycling bins in each washroom. This would decrease the impact we have on the environment, but the costs of paper towels would still remain the same.
This will save carbon emissions, because there will be much less paper waste going into the landfills.
