For many Apple farmers the future of the Ontario apple industry does not look very promising. Competition between farms has increased as more and more trees are planted around the world. The volume of the Ontario apple crop is increasing every year. The crop in 1991 was 26.7% larger than the 1987 crop. The price of apple farming has also increased. The average cost of production for all farmers has gone up 8.1 % in the last 5 years. Packing and shipping costs have gone up by 22% in the same 5 year period. The rising cost of production makes the cost of apples rise. It's a simple case of cause and effect.
