Naturally Imperfect Apples

Environment   Apr 18, 2016 by Katie, Hillary, Melanie, Victoria

As we know climate change has damaged our apple industry in Ontario. In 2015 50% of our apples were destroyed due to the unpredictable winter weather. Moreover frost is killing apples and those that do survive are bruised, weirdly shaped, and lack the quality apples in Ontario have had in the past. As well as this the cost of apples has risen, causing families to spend more money on apples or turn to alternate food sources. As with a lot of things in the world this all comes down to money in the business field. Stores have noticed that apples have started to decrease in quality, and people have stopped buying the apples because of the cost. Their solution was simple. Grocery stores have now started selling "naturally perfect apples" for less money. Loblaw Cos. Ltd. has started to sell blemished, misshapen or undersized produce under the No Name Naturally Imperfect brand. A bag of these apples can usually amount to 4$. While most people view this as a fantastic idea because there are less apples going to waste (and they aren't wrong), we are ignoring the fact that there wouldn't be a need for this product if we stopped climate change. What the public doesn't know is that these apples aren't a way to reduce waste but rather as a way for companies to advertise the blemished apples that are now being produced in Ontario's apple. Although this product is a good way to ensure apples aren't being wasted we should be focusing our attention on why the quality of apples has decrease-climate change, and how we can stop it!
