Manitoulin Inquiry Question

Environment   Apr 4, 2016 by Kayla Greenman

Our inquiry questions are:

How does ice coverage effect out local recreational activities?

How can we support buying local to a larger extentent on Manitoulin?

How large of an effect will buying local have on our climate?

Will the island eventually not be an island? Will we connect to other land or will we be underneath the water?

What is climate change and water levels doing to our local fisheries?

These are great questions for Manitoulin as we are surrounded in water, and the island is limited in activities so everything the ice offers is important to us. We have an abundance of locally grown food that we do not take advantage of, and that should change. We want to keep Manitoulin beautiful forever, so hopefully our little school can make a difference.

These are all really good questions! Buying local is an excellent way to reduce emissions from the transportation of goods, especially for necessities like food. It would be interesting to see just how large of an impact buying local vs. importing will make for the island.

Have you (or perhaps a relative or neighbor) personally seen any change in Manitoulin's climate that might tie into your questions?
