Gananoque & Climate Change

If we don’t get enough snow during the winter months to melt in the spring to feed our rivers and lakes. Therefore puts the water levels low. Gananoque relies on the boat tours and the marines to attract tourist to this area. Therefore if the water is low the boat tour can’t dock at the marines causing a domino effect in the economy. (For example. Our motels, restaurants, our stores, our theaters, creating loss of jobs.)

To many ice/snow storms effect people in many ways. People take risks driving especially when needed to get to work places.

Too hot and humid conditions effect breathing problems in the elderly and infants.

Agricultural in the area are local farms. Dairy and vegetable. Recreational industry would include the area for hockey, the schools for sports. The beaches for swimming. The local parks. And the local theaters.

The town needs to create more small industry or shops to employ local people.

Hypotheses

#1 – if the weather takes a turn for an extremely cold spell it effects the vegetation. Breaking of tree branches, power outages.

#2 – if the weather is extremely wet, things won’t grow, floods will occur.

#3 – if the weather is extremely dry things cannot grow

– causing droughts, plants and vegetation to die.

Question #1

What will happen if the weather is to get to dry and there is no more water to water crops?

Question #2

How can we prevent from crops withering from sun radiation?

Question #3

If there was to be a longer summer season how would they be able to grow crops and plants is there’s no rain for them to be watered on their own?

Question #4

If there was to be no rain during the summer how would it effect the environment?

Question #5

How can we fix the problem with not being able to stop other animals from eating the growing crops in farmers’ fields?

Question #6

Can we keep the crops hydrated naturally without having it rain every week? and How?

Hi Micky,

You talked about contacting the Ontario Farmers association. Did you? Did they reply? Please post your message to them.

Moving forward into the second part of this project - what are the systems of irrigation that are cost effective and possible to implement in this area? Where would the water come from? What crops are the most drought tolerant, and can these same crops withstand occasional heavy rains as well/
