Online Town Hall Final Thoughts

Environment   Apr 18, 2016 by Kayla Greenman

From the webinar we have participated in today, I have discovered and analyzed several different resolutions to our inquiry questions.

For example, I've coverage greatly effects our winter and some of or summer recreational activities, alone with many of the other schools we spoke to today. We all face the issues of ice coverage through snow machining and ice fishing. Along with this, when water isn't freezing, it is creating a higher average temperature. This makes it hard for some species to survive and easier for diseases to spread.

Another inquiry question we had was how we can support buying local to a larger extent of Manitoulin island. We spoke today on many different solutions such as tax subsidies and and availability in local stores.

Buying local can have a huge effect on our climate. A student from our school created a couple slides to demenstrate the amount of CO2 emissions just to get one shipment of product from Costa Rica to Toronto. The result was ridiculous. If all places were to buy local, it would decrease the over all CO2 emissions of the world astronomically.

So far, water levels haven't deviated enough to ever seriously effect where we live, but that doesn't mean it isn't a possibility. If people continue to waste the way they due, it's hard to say what could happen to Manitoulin.

It was very interesting to see that even though we are kilometres away from the other schools, we are facing a lot of the same issues, and taking the same first steps. This was a great experience to be involved in, and I can't wait for our ideas to make a reality and help fix climate change in Ontario.
