Inquiry Findings: Blog #2

Technology   Mar 24, 2017 by Stuart Dietrich

I researched about the energy and communication infrastructures of Toronto. I found the majority of the information on websites and in documents that the city of Toronto and the government created. I discovered important information about Toronto’s energy infrastructure on Toronto Hydro’s website and found current plans and ideas in news articles. Organizations and foundations such as the David Suzuki Foundation also provided information on their websites and articles. Through my research, I found that Toronto’s energy infrastructure needs to be rebuilt and upgraded. Also, there needs to be large changes to provide solutions to some of the obstacles that are involved with energy conservation and creation. I came to the conclusion that both the physical infrastructure and government policies must adapt in order for Toronto to be able to deal with future climate change issues from an energy standpoint. Climate change will cause many issues in the future for example, unpredictable weather, which will put stress on Toronto’s infrastructure. I also came to the conclusion that currently Toronto will have trouble effectively handling these issues as they relate to energy and this will cause a decreased quality of life in Toronto as climate change progresses. I found it alarming that a large part of Toronto’s power distribution grid was installed in the 1950s and 1960s and almost 60% of it will have to be rebuilt over the next two decades. This combined with the added stresses brought on by climate change demonstrates some of the future issues Toronto will have to deal with.

In response to the power distribution grid issues... I watched a story of a family living off the grid and using alternative means of power. It was quite interesting. Watch the video here: http://tvo.org/video/programs/climate-watch-shorts...
