How do ice conditions affect a manitoulin winter

Environment   Apr 4, 2016 by Jonah kennedy

Ice conditions are a very interesting factor on manitoulin island.if there is lots of ice and lots of snow islanders can ice fish and go snowmobiling all winter long but if we have a humid winter, there will be limited amounts of snowmobiling and ice fishing. Also,if we have a large amount of ice and snow then water levels will be higher then average in the spring when all the ice and snow melts wich can affect the migrating trout and smelts which come into a river off the great lakes to spawn. If the water is to high or to low,it will make it harder for them to spawn.

Do you feel that you are able to see more changes to your climate, since you are more north than us, who are in the south? For example, experience less/more winter snow or have more frequent storms.

Outdoor winter recreation is directly affected by ice conditions. This is an important topic since ice fishing and snowmobiling are a part of our identity as Northern Ontarians.
