Forest Fires

Apr 6, 2016 by Claire Paquette

If there was something that all house owners could do to protect their homes during a forest fire what would it be? Should house owners always be prepared for a fire?

I wanted to have a question that could potentionally help home owners, so that if a forest fire occured they would know what to do. A majority of people get scared when fires occur and panic, and answering my question will help owners understand what they need to do to stay safe. Forest fires occur in many different communities and people aren't aware of the dangers that they could do if you're not prepared. While figuring out this question,  I wanted to make sure that everyone could take ideas from the answer and benefit from it. I believe that this is a great question as we are going to be seeing an increase in forest fires if the temperature keeps increasing and they could occur at any time. We should all be prepared for a fire; however some of us are not and if you are someone who isnt prepared, the answer to this question could help you.

According to the Canadian Red Cross "There are approximately 8,000 forest fires in Canada each year." These numbers should be alarming and concern Canadians pushing them to find solutions to forest fires and how to respond if one happens in your community.

The Canadian Red Cross ensures safety by the following actions:

Call 9-1-1

  • Close all windows and doors in your house.
  • Cover vents, windows, and other openings of the house with duct tape and/or precut pieces of plywood.
  • Park your car, positioned forward out of the driveway. Keep your car windows closed and have your valuables already packed in your car.
  • Turn off propane or natural gas.
  • Turn on the lights in the house, porch, garage and yard. Inside the house, move materials that light easily on fire such as curtains and furniture away from the windows.
  • Stay tuned to your local radio station for up-to-date information on the fire and possible road closures.
  • Check on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours (the elderly, ill, disabled) who may require special assistance.
