Imapct of Climate Change to Lakes in The Winter

Environment   Apr 8, 2016 by Ashley, Sarah, Willow, Bethany

During the milder winters, the snow melts earlier in the year, causing less ice cover on lakes and the water will not form an adequate ice pack until later in the season and melt earlier. Due to thinner snow there is an increase in accidents during the winter months, because of falls through the ice. Less ice means for humans, less ice for skating and ice fishing.

Changing rainfall patterns will occur due to lower temperature in the winters. Climate change in the winter changes water’s movement between air, soil, plants and other bodies of water. There will also be less water available for renewable energy production and water ways. Increasing water temperatures may result in lower water quality as more micro-organisms are found in lakes. Warmer-water species may spread into new northern habitats. More extreme weather may result in more frequent flooding, erosions, shoreline damage, infrastructure failures and decreased water quality due to increased runoff and debris.
