What are the benefits of local food production

I live on a farm and know that there is not a market in our community to sell large amounts of cows and I know that if there where a way to do so my family would certainly sell all our live stock locally. I say this because a good market brings good prices. In the end it is a farmers job to sell his or hers livestock and turn a profit in the end.
